Not everyone may have heard of this clever little acid but in actual fact it can have a very big bearing on our lives in so many ways. It’s slowly coming to the fore for its health benefits but its also gaining popularity in the cosmetic industry as the latest must have treatment, even though more research still needs to be carried out.

You might be even more surprised to learn you have this substance in your own body working away happily day after day. So what is it? What does it do and how can it help us? Well, those questions and more will be answered in this article!

What Exactly Is It and What Does It Do?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance attaching itself to collagen and elastin to form cartilage! Yes – your knees will be extremely happy now in most cases we hope! HA provides supplies of synovial which is needed in healthy joint lubrication, and to keep you mobile. It also keeps cartilage extremely flexible and strong. In actual fact HA is present in each and every tissue of the body carrying out some vital functions.

It assists the delivery of much needed nutrients and takes away toxins from cells that don’t have a supply of blood. The cartilage is a prime example of this and our joints will become brittle and weak without it. HA also helps enables water retention locking moisture into the space between each cell. This keeps collagen and elastin moist which in turn can promote a youthful appearance in the longer term.

Let’s compare the joints of the human body to working parts of a large machine? The joint fluid in the human body carries out the same function as the oil in the machinery. The Machine oil will need to be replaced because the heat and friction eventually breaks down the oils viscosity.

The oil thins to the extent it can’t protect the metal surfaces from wear and tear. If no fresh lubrication is forthcoming then the machinery will eventually seize. Hyaluronic acid assists the joints of the body in the same way. As we get older the effects of the joint fluid lessens. HA helps to maintain normal cushioning.

Did you know? Large amounts of Hyaluronic acid can be found inside the eyeball? This is called the vitreous humor and is made up almost completely of hyaluronic acid. The HA gives the fluid inside the eye an oil like property. If we use the machinery analogy again the oil acts as a shock protector for the eye also delivering nutrients.

So What about Extra Health Benefits?

This is the fascinating part as some studies have shown HA can be a great treatment for both the miseries of Osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis particularly when it’s injected. One research project found more than 80 per cent of individuals had wonderful relief from arthritis for up to a single year before another injection was required!

Tell Us About the Cosmetic Side

Those cosmetic products containing HA are claiming to hydrate the skin. This gives it a much smoother and radiant glow making people feel much better about themselves. But there’s a lot more as recent clinical studies have discovered. HA can actually help wounds heal much more quickly and improve the appearance of both old and new scars.

There are products called injectible HA fillers like Restylane, and these are used to lessen the appearance of any sagging skin. Depressions in the skin caused by things like acne and injury can also benefit from the qualities of HA. It’s important to remember HA does eventually become fully absorbed into the body, and so any cosmetic or even medical treatment won’t be permanent. It should however, last for around nine months.

So How Can We Take HA?

HA can be administered successfully via an injection but if look around health stores, drug stores and even online you’ll find HA may be available as an oral supplement. It may however, take two to four months for benefits to be fully felt. Then it’s advisable to start decreasing the dose. Hyaluronic acid has undergone a natural enzyme cleaning technique resulting in much better absorption. Whether ingested as a pill it is able to enter joint tissue more easily is not fully understood as yet.

There is little doubt HA has a huge part to play in various conditions, but of course new things are being discovered about the acid with each passing day. You now know we have this present in our body and can’t properly function without it. All supplements must be taken with caution and on the right advice. It’s best to take in more reading on the topic and there’s quite a bit out there on the internet.

HA is valuable and so is your health!
