What is the Lemonade Diet?
The Lemonade Diet hit the headlines a few years ago when Beyoncé revealed that she had used it to lose weight quickly ahead of her role in Dreamgirls: She claimed that she was able to lose 20 pounds in a matter of weeks!
However, even though that may have been the first time you heard about this extreme diet, it’s actually been around since the 1950s. The diet itself is intended to last for just two weeks. In that time, the participant is expected not to eat any solid food at all- Yes, you heard right, NO food for two weeks! Instead, dieters are allowed 6 or more servings of a lemon-based drink per day, with the option of adding in herbal teas for laxative purposes, and salt-water for further “detoxing” purposes (no more than 2 teaspoons of salt per litre of water).

- 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
- 1/10 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

Although the diet specifies that the maximum length of fasting time is two weeks, we would recommend trying for just a couple of days to see how your body reacts to the sudden lack of food. Once your fast is over, reintroduce foods slowly, starting with soups and building up to full, balanced meals.
The Side Effects of the Lemonade Diet:
In addition to side effects like nausea, stomach upsets, dizziness and headaches, one of the biggest problems with the theory of this diet is that, after time away from food, the urge will be to binge once you are allowed it again. This will not only negate all the effects of the fasting, but in all likelihood extra weight will be added on along with what you had lost in the first place!
And perhaps we should consider the weight actually being lost. When the body is forced into starvation mode, the first thing to be lost is not fat, since the body is “feeding” itself on the only quality protein it has at its disposal; namely, your muscles. Muscle-loss is not ideal for producing that svelte figure you are after, and needless to say it is incredibly bad for your health.
