I am surprised to find out that Keno has such a long history and that it actually did not change a lot during the centuries. I find it fun to play, so this is my favorite pastime now.

History

Cheung went to the people to ask for more money for the army, but they refused, so instead he created baige piao. The game was extremely popular, and Cheung was able to generate enough cash to keep his army well-supplied, and the city was saved. Soon afterwards, the game spread across China, and was even used to fund the construction of the Great Wall of China. Originally, baige piao didn't have numbers, but rather employed a system still used today among Chinese communities. This system uses the first 80 characters found in the Qianziwen, or "Book of a Thousand Characters." This anonymously written text is a classic of Chinese literature, and is made up of precisely 1,000 different ideograms. This text is quite popular among educated Chinese, and is so well-known that its characters are often used in place of the numbers 1 to 1,000.
