The 10s and the face cards have no value. Cards lower than 10 are worth their face value, and aces count as 1. Suits are irrelevant. When the total is greater than 9, the digit in the tens position is dropped, with 10 becoming 0, 11 becoming 1, 12 becomes 2, and so on. So, if a player has a 4, 6 and 3, and the competing hand has a 2 and a 6, that hand wins with a total of 8 to 3. The object of Baccarat is to bet on whose hand will total the highest. It's much like making a wager on either Black or Red when playing Roulette; it pays out even money, 1:1, unless you hit the standoff, which pays off at either 8-1 or 9-1. There's one difference between betting Banco or Punto, whic is that you'll have to pay a 5% commission to the casino for every win on Banco. That's because, on average, when playing through an 8-deck shoe, the Bank will come out 3 to 4 hands ahead of the Punto, so you have to balance out the advantage you get by paying a 5% commission to the house. A hand in Baccarat can have as few cards as 2 and as many as 3. The dealer deals, facedown, one card to the player who has put the biggest wager on Punto and then one to Banco, then another to Punto and one to Banco.
